Score!
Few people know that I paint. Well, now the 100+ regular readers of this blog know, which means that pretty soon, the whole world will know, because what is blogging except a giant gossiping circus? (i love that, by the way. LOVE IT.)
I had a lunch date today, after which he and I went downtown to geek out and take photos. Because oh my GOD I love to take photos. He does, too.
We did that for about an hour (I got some great shots with my little Elph, which I will be posting to Flickr this evening), and then he had to go to his brother’s place to do some stuff before work (he’s a photographer at a nightclub on the weekends), so we parted ways, and then I headed home.
On the way, I passed this art store on Union that’s NEVER open when I pass by normally. It was open! Yay! I’m quickly running out of my “good” acrylic paints (the ones I can actually get texture out of), so I needed to get some more. Also: brushes.
So I was browsing, and looked into the framing area as I passed the doorway. Leaning against the wall were these pretty big bundles of matboard, wrapped in plastic and labeled, “Scrap Matboard - $5″. I picked out two with a lot of diverse colors. $10, and I won’t have to buy canvases for a while. I love painting on matboard. There’s a gold one in there, and some patterned pieces, too. If I remember to buy an Xacto knife (I thought about it while I was there, and then promptly forgot in the search for a large fanbrush that wouldn’t set me back $30), I’ll be able to do some piecework in mixed media.
THEN, after I’d picked out some paint and brushes, and gotten another tray for mixing paint, I went up to the counter and found out that since I’m a student, I get a 15% discount.
This almost makes up for the fact that I can’t go out to Arlington for band practice tomorrow (because of my car’s oil thing - I don’t feel safe doing it).
I’m going to go put off doing my psych homework for a bit longer while I mix some paint and finish that canvas that’s been sitting in the corner for the past month.

Liquitex makes mediums to mix with acrylics to add texture - you might like to try those!

(this reminds me that I need to buy some new brushes)
Ooh! I’ll have to go pick some of those up. The store was closing while I was there (I literally got there just in time), so I didn’t have time to do more than pick up the paints and matting before they started turning out lights and hustling people out. Thanks for the link!
You should show some of your art here! And pics are well. Since we all know about your artistic side now ;-)
I’ve been thinking about posting photos for a while, but since it’s therapy art, it’s kind of weird-looking…mostly stuff smeared on with a palette knife. I’ll post a photo of one of the ones I did tonight, though.
I don’t paint, but I love ink pens, quills, fountain pens. There is aphrodesia in the air of art supply stores, to me. I can see where buying paints could border on fetishistic, and I’m fascinated by those dry cakes of ink for Chinese/Japanese calligraphy.
You’re a woman of diverse talents– that you paint and take photos doesn’t surprise me.
Thanks for the compliment - I’m something of a Jack of all trades, master of none - that’s why it’s taking me so long to decide what I want to do with my degree, and if I even want to stay in my current major. Woo?
It can be a difficult challenge to choose a vocation if you are a person with a lot of options. You are young enough, though, that you could have several very successful careers ahead of you - you just need to commit to one every now and again.
