Dear Folks-who-don’t-realize-it’s-too-late-to-change-my-mind,

Does this sound familiar?:

“If Bush gets elected, I’m moving to Canada!”

Then get off of my back for wanting to stock up on ammo before the Obama administration jacks it up and tries to restrict my right to carry.

I’m not threatening to leave.

I’m not making empty promises.

I’m not saying anything derogatory about anyone.

I just want to be prepared for the inevitable, which has been said:  Obama isn’t going to reverse the 2nd Amendment (like he could, anyway…that’d be exceedingly difficult), but there is such a situation that would render the 2nd Amendment worthless, or nearly so.  Look at Massachusetts, California, and Cook County, IL (oh, lulz, that’s where Obama is from).  Hell…look at our nation’s capital!  You’d think that DC, of all places, would allow folks to exercise their rights, but nooooooo.  You can regulate something out of existence without explicitly saying that you’re taking it away.  And the process will be so slow that those of you NOT following it won’t even notice until it’s too late to do anything about it.

Don’t talk to me like I’m a stupid redneck, don’t insinuate that I have no idea what I’m talking about, and don’t make assumptions about where I get my information.  The NRA doesn’t own my soul.  I do know how to think for myself.

What do I think?  I think that I like having the option to protect myself.  I think that the best thing you can do for your family is to rely on yourselves, and let the police take care of the paperwork, because that’s all they can do if someone breaks into your home and threatens your life.  The police aren’t there to protect you, they’re just there to clean up.  Sorry to burst your bubble.

You can be as consciencious as possible, and something could still go wrong.  You could be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  You could be in your HOME, the place you feel the safest, and someone could fuck that up for you by breaking in.  Whether they mean to take your life or not, they’re on your property, and since they’ve broken in, who knows what else they’re willing to do, or capable of, to carry out their wishes?  You could be with someone you trust, and have them turn on you.

Also, who the hell are you to tell me that a form of recreation I enjoy is uncouth or unacceptable?  Personally, I find football to be stupid.  It’s not a functional act…you’re chasing people around after an oblong piece of inflated pigskin.  Or, even worse, you’re sitting in the cold, on a metal seat, cheering for someone chasing around an oblong piece of inflated pigskin.  How is that productive or entertaining?

Going to the range not only helps your focus, but it can actually be useful someday.  The more you practice, the more you’re prepared if something were to happen.  People today rely on too many other folks to do things for them.  We’re getting soft and complacent as a nation.  We want someone else to take care of us (this, I believe, is the biggest reason for Obama’s popularity - he’s promising things he has no right to give).  I choose to take care of myself.  I refuse to be a statistic without being alive to see myself on the list of those who successfully fought back.

Also?  Going to the range feels really good.  You aim, breathe, tighten your grip, focus on the front sight, and press the trigger, and BANG.  Result.  You have a goal.  And the better you get putting those silly holes in those silly targets, the better chance you stand in a real emergency.

What can you do after playing football?  Try tackling a bullet.  It doesn’t work very well.

And why didn’t you move to Canada, anyway?  If you want to live like a Socialist, move to a Socialist country, and leave the rest of us alone.  We like to keep what we work for, give to charity when we choose (and not all of us declare it on our taxes for a rebate, because we were ACTUALLY being generous), use the Amendments as they were meant to keep each other in check, and let people face the consequences of their actions, good or bad.  That’s LIFE.  It’s not all fun, it’s not all fair, but if someone’s taking care of you all the time, you never learn anything, you never grow, and you never learn to think for yourself.

I used to be a Liberal.  I used to think the same way you do.  I’ve been poor…I still am.  I don’t have health insurance, and it sucks.  I have conditions that I can’t take care of because of the lack on insurance, and the lack of programs to help people like me in my city.

It wasn’t until I learned that I could actually take care of myself, in 2006, that I started to change my mind.  I voted for Kerry in 2004.  A scant 2 years later, I was extolling the virtues of Capitalism and an actual MARKET system for health care and other services.  I could see how it would work, though not without a lot of adjustment.  I’m not completely naive.  I’ve seen both sides.

I like this one better.

___

Also, before anyone says it, I don’t give a good god damn what race or gender the President is.  This IS America, y’all.

I just care that they actually have the best interests of the country at heart…the country as a WHOLE, not just the people who whine the loudest.  I just don’t feel that Obama does.  I don’t particularly care for McCain, either, but this election has become, for many, the “lesser of two evils”, and I include myself in that category.

So take your happy little ass to the polls and do your thing, and I’ll do mine, tomorrow we’ll see what happens, and then we wait.  It’s the same story either way, no matter who gets elected.

Sincerely,

Bonnie

Amen!! I used to be a NYC Liberal myself and I know exactly where you’re coming from. Having lived on both sides of the political spectrum, I daresay I do like this side better. I vote early at 5:30 a.m. I can’t wait.

Really, squeaks, don’t hold back tell us how you really feel… LOL. Good on you girl. I voted last friday because I thought I’d be on the road tomorrow. Instead I’ll be home sucking on the alcohols and watching the circus. I wonder how long it’ll take the MSM to declare the lightbringer the winner? I’m guessing 11 a.m. Eastern.

Everyone should certainly vote their conscience, so ‘good on ya’ as they say! No one should vote for someone if they don’t feel they have the best interests of the nation at heart.

In my opinion, the only thing anyone should worry about are those who makes their voting decisions based on either a lack of information or outright false information. I’m pretty shocked [though I shouldn't be] and the prevalence of both in those want to ‘vote against’ Obama. I still haven’t heard anyone who’s voting for McCain to give positive reasons for it, but I really do like McCain overall, too. I think they both truly want what they see as best for America.

Being a true independent [I'm definitely not a Liberal either] and seeing pretty clearly the conceits of both sides, as one voter, I’d like to see this guy have a shot. It’s not unreasonable to say that the other side didn’t do too well with the last eight years.

  • Don’t feel too bad about the kerry thing.

I donated/voted in the primaries for Dean back in ‘04.

It takes a big person to admit the error of their ways, Squeaks. Welcome to the Dark Side. It speaks well of you that you can maintain your Conservative-ness in the cesspool of Upper Education.

Hearing that you can see the Light gives me hope for my #1 son and his wife. I’ve got #2 son almost there; at least I can get him to the range. I think he’s about to ask me for one of my pistolas for Christmas.

As they say a Conservative is a Liberal that’s been mugged. To that I would add that a Libertarian is a Conservative that’s been mugged by the government.

  • God bless you, Squeaks! You embody the best arguments for women’s suffrage. If half the people out there had a brain like yours, today we would not be looking at our current pickle.
